Collett Shihan, although he prefers the title
sensei in the dojo, is better known simply as “JC” or as “Mez.” He has been
involved in the Japanese martial arts since 1963 when he started in the then
rather exotic martial art of Kodokan Judo at his local Police Boys Club as they
were called back then, now PCYC, after viewing a newsreel about it at the
cinema in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympic Games.
After a while he grew tired of the
competitive aspect of Judo and drifted off to look for something else. In those
early days, like so many beginning martial artists he floated here and there, a
bit of a butterfly, not really knowing what it was he was looking for but
knowing he hadn't found it yet!
After witnessing a “friendly contest” between
three brothers who were close friends of the family, one a Golden Gloves boxer,
another a Tae Kwon Do practitioner and the third a Jujutsu practitioner, that
resulted in one broken arm and an assortment of cuts and bruises he decided to
concentrate on Nihon Jujutsu!
However,
it wasn’t until 1972 after moving to Darwin for work that he found his place in
the budo when he met and became a student of now Professor Raymond LEA who was
a senior student of the late Professor Kam Hock HOE.
Professor
Lea is now the master level instructor and Saiko Shihan, 最古師範, Headmaster of the Kokusai Jujutsu
Kenkyukai,國際柔術研究會, the International
Jujutsu Research Society. Professor Lea is now the holder of the Dento
no Kyoju, 伝統の教授, Professor
of the Tradition and Judan, 十段, 10th
Dan licences.
Collett
Shihan remains to this day a student and close friend of Professor Lea and
assists him with research into and promotion of Professor Hoe’s Hyou-ha Bankoku
Jujutsu, Kuatsu and Hakuda Kenpo.
In
parallel to jujutsu, Collett Shihan has practiced a number of other martial
arts including the Korean art of Tang Soo Do, Shotokan karate, Taiji Quan and
other Chinese martial disciplines.
Most
of Collett Shihan’s non-jujutsu training however, has been in Goju-ryu Kenpo
under the guidance of Tino Ceberano Hanshi OAM Judan, 十段, 10th Dan of the Sekai Kushindo Kobujutsu Kenkyukai, 世界空神道武術研究会, the World Kushindo Classical Martial Arts Research Society.
Collett Shihan has come to understand that
these two arts are closely coupled with each providing skills that enhances the
other.
